Unearthing Buried Treasures

Last week we spent a few days digging for buried treasures. Our project was to clean up the overgrown landscaping at a beautiful old farmhouse. Our goal was to salvage everything possible and prune it back into shape. We were amazed at the treasures that were hidden in the overgrowth. We uncovered perennials, shrubbery, stone retaining walls, a stepped pathway and a beautiful brick patio. Read on to watch this stunning transformation.

What a difference a few days of pruning and weed-pulling can make! Now, with a thick layer of fresh mulch, these beds will be easy to maintain. Granted, not everyone will find such awesome treasures buried in their landscape but we wanted to show our readers what one can accomplish in a very short amount of time. This post is for the do-it-yourselfers out there.
  • Pull, don't spray! You can win the battle over weeds without using chemicals.
  • You don't have to rip everything out and start from scratch. Many tired or overgrown landscapes have good bones. Work with what you have on site. Start with a good weeding, a light pruning and a fresh layer of mulch.
  • If that's not enough to wake up your landscape try splitting your perennials. Use the splits to fill in your existing landscape or create new beds.
  • Get creative. Reuse materials on hand in new and exciting ways. Pinterest is a great place to start for inspiration.
  • Big transformations can be affordable if not free. Mulch was our only purchase for this project at $150.
