Block Party!

Phase III - Build a retaining wall along the back of the property using the wall blocks that were removed & replaced with natural stone. It was a long span that varied in height by approximately 5' end to end. Multiple tiers resolved the height difference and almost all of the blocks were reused.
Here's a look at how it all came together.
Our work here is done for the season. We'll be back in the spring to plant the beds after the owners have finished their exterior construction projects.

While constructing the front garage bed we came across this pink heart shaped stone (shown left). It was placed in a spot where it could be enjoyed. Do you see it below? At the end of the wall we also included a small display of Petoskey stones collected by the owner. With this bed constructed we're on to Phase II.

The tiered bed at the rear of the garage was next on the list. Smaller stones made this bed much easier and faster to construct. The hardest part was choosing which stones to use. They all had such beautiful color!

Wall blocks edged the landscape beds on three sides of the home. The owners wanted the block replaced with natural stone and wanted the beds to continue all the way around the house. We created the new bed along the side of the house, edged the existing beds and began to lay out the stone boarder. The garage border and all four sides of the house are complete and shown in the slideshow below.
Next week we'll be working on Phase III - reusing those wall blocks to construct a low wall along the back of the property. Salvaged plants (including the big lilac bushes from the front of the garage) will be planted behind the wall to create a natural screen for privacy. You can see some of the salvaged plants (below right) heeled into the garden for safekeeping. These plants will fill the new beds in the spring. We could plant the beds now but there is more construction scheduled for this home. As much as we'd love to see the new beds planted... we will have to wait.

Stay tuned. Next week this will be a wall!
