Use existing boulders on site to create natural looking groupings tiering down slope between side of home & public sidewalk to restore former rock garden. Incorporate planting pockets into stone groupings for perennial installation. Randomly scatter several existing boulders in shaded inset area to create a natural looking visual tie-in to rock garden area. Install shade garden plantings to add visual interest & compliment rock garden.

ASTILBE

PURPLE PALACE CORA BELL

• Astilbe & Cora Bells are available in a variety of colors.
• Both are deer resistant. 
• Astilbes bloom from late spring through late summer depending on color & variety chosen.
• ​Cora Bells bloom in summer into fall.  Leaves are semi-evergreen and provide year-round color

BLEEDING HEART
Available in pink, red or white.  Late spring/early summer bloomer.  Deer resistant.

BLACK NEGLIGEE BUGBANE

GOATSBEARD

• Black Negligee Bugbane has beautiful dark foliage.  Wispy bloom spikes can reach 4-5' in late summer to early fall.  Fragrant, attracts butterflies & is deer resistant.
• Goatsbeard is a shrub-like perennial.  Deer resistant.  Showy plumes early to mid summer.

JAPANESE ALL-GOLD FOREST GRASS

SUMMERSWEET

Shade loving ornamental grass that provides intense pops of color. Stays in low manageable clumps.  Deer, disease & pest resistant.

Late summer bloomer.  Deer resistant.  Fragrant blooms, yellow fall foliage.  Deer & disease resistant.   Attracts polinators.

JAPANESE PAINTED FERNS & CINNAMON FERN

• Great for shady areas. 
• Adds visual interest through color & texture.
• Provides up north "woodsy" look.
• Deer resistant.  

CONSIDER ADDING:

• Tree-form Hydrangea or Japanese Maple for a show-stopping focal point.
• Spring bulbs for early interest.
• Seating Area in Inset Shaded Area (With or Without Stepper Path to Seating)
• Drip Irrigation is Highly Recommended

SWEET WOODRUFF

Low growing, flowering, manageable ground cover.  Fragrant star-shaped blooms in late spring to early summer.  Deer & pest resistant.  Can be used to flavor teas or as scent in potpourris & sachets.
